New environmental threat due to Houthi attack and the government calls for urgent international assistance

Urgent assistance was requested on Saturday by the Yemeni internationally recognized government to control an oil spill and potential chemical leak in the Red Sea due to the Houthi attack on a commercial cargo ship in the Red Sea.
A report by the US CENTCOM stated that Iran-backed Houthis targeted the vessel with a missile strike causing damage.
CENTCOM also reported that the vessel was transporting over 41,000 tons of fertilizer when it suffered an “unprovoked and reckless attack” that caused “significant damage” and an “18-mile oil slick. “The US military also warned of the danger of a spill from the vessel’s cargo of fertilizer.
On its side, the internationally recognized Yemeni government announced the formation of a crisis cell to develop an emergency plan to deal with the leak from “Rubimar”.
In a statement, the government called on all countries, organizations and bodies concerned with the preservation of the marine environment to quickly deal with the crisis of the “Rubimar” ship.
The Rubymar, a British-registered, Lebanese-operated cargo vessel, was attacked on Feb. 18 while sailing through Bab el-Mandeb Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The Houthis attack on Belize-flagged ship in the gulf of Aden results in 29 km (18 mile) oil slick, sparking environmental crisis in the Red Sea.
Early on Friday ,the US forces ‘shot down three Houthi one-way attack (drones) near several commercial ships operating in the Red Sea and there was no damage to any of the ships,’ the Central Command (CENTCOM) said on social media.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthis have been targeting shipping for months and their attacks have persisted despite repeated American and British strikes aimed at degrading the rebels’ ability to threaten a vital global trade route.

بلغ إجمالي عدد المركبات المرخصة بمحافظات الجمهورية 10,41 مليون مركبة في 31/12/2024 مقابل 9.95 مليون مركبة في 31/12 /2023 بنسبة ارتفاع قدرها 4.7٪.
جـاءت محـافـظة القـاهـرة في المرتبـة الأولــــى حيث بلغت عــدد المركــــــبات بـــها 2,7 مليون مركبـــة بنســبة 25,9٪ ومحافــظة الجيــزة في المرتبــة الثانية بعدد 1,5 مليـون مركبة بنسبة 14,2٪ ثم محافظة الإسكندرية في المرتبة الثالثـة بعدد 745,6 ألف مركبة بنسبة 7,2٪ وجاءت محافظة جنوب سيناء في المرتبة الأخيرة حيــث بلغت عــــدد المركبـــــــات بها 44,6 ألف مركبـة بنسبة 0,4 ٪ من إجمـــالي المركبـــــات ذلك في 31/12/2024.
بلغ إجمالي عدد السيارات المرخصة 5,7 مليون سيارة بنسبة 55,1 ٪ من إجمالي المركبات في 31/12/2024 وكان العدد الأكــبر للسيارات الخاصة (ملاكي) حيــــث بلغت 5,4 ملــــيون سيارة بنسبة 94,5 ٪ تليها سيارات الأجرة بعدد 299,8 ألف سيارة بنسبة 5,2٪ وأقلهـــــا ســيارات مؤقتة بعدد 189سيارة .
بلغ إجمـــــــالي عدد الأتوبيســات المرخصــــة 174,6 ألف أتوبيس بنسبة 1,7٪ من إجمالي المركبات في 31/12/2024 وجاء الأتوبيـــس الخــاص في المرتبة الأولى بعدد 72,8 ألف أتوبيس بنسبة 41,7٪ والاتوبيس العــام في المرتبة الأخيــــرة بعــدد 12,9 ألف أتوبيس بنسبة 7,4٪ من إجمالي عدد الاتوبيسات .
بلـغ إجمالي عـدد سيارات النقـل والمقطــــورات المرخصـة 1,3 مليـون سيارة بنسبة 12,5٪ مـن إجمــالي المـركبات فــي 31/12/2024 حيث بـلغ إجمالي عدد سيارات النقـل المرخصة 1,2 مليون سيـارة بنســبة 92,4٪ ، وبلـغ إجمالي عدد المقطورات المرخصـة 99,0 ألف مقطـورة بنسبة 7,6 ٪ مـن إجـمـــــــالي عدد سيارات النقل والمقطورات فــي 31/12/2024.
