كشفت دراسة حديثة أن قطاعاً واسعاً من مستخدمي شبكات المحمول في الولايات المتحدة لا يدركون قدرتهم على توفير مبالغ ضخمة من تكلفة فواتيرهم الشهرية بمجرد التحول من الشركات الكبرى مثل Verizon وAT&T وT-Mobile إلى شركات الاتصالات الثانوية المعروفة باسم MVNO (مشغل الشبكة الافتراضية).
ما هو MVNO وكيف يعمل؟MVNO هو شركة اتصالات تقدم خدمات الهاتف المحمول بالاعتماد على البنية التحتية للشركات الكبرى لكنها توفر باقات أرخص وأكثر مرونة.

أوضحت التقارير أن مستخدمي MVNO قد يواجهون أحياناً أولوية أقل في سرعة الانترنت وقت الذروة أو فقدان بعض الميزات الإضافية، لكن الغالبية العظمى من المستخدمين تجد في الخطط الثانوية بديلاً مثالياً للاستخدام اليومي العادي، خصوصاً للعائلات وطلاب الجامعات.
توعية وفجوة معلوماتية في السوق الأمريكيما يزال كثيرون في الولايات المتحدة غير مطلعين على وجود هذه البدائل الاقتصادية أو يعتقدون أن الخدمة أقل جودة، وهو ما يدفع MVNO لتكثيف حملاتها الترويجية وإبراز قصص العملاء الذين حققوا وفورات سنوية كبيرة دون التضحية بجودة الاتصال الأساسية.
